Who is Patanjali
Patanjali is the name of the author of the Yoga Sutra, as well as other works on grammar, medicine and metaphysics. However, very little is known about his life and identity. Some scholars believe that he was a single person who lived around the 2nd century BCE, while others suggest that he was a collective name for a group of authors who compiled the sutras over a period of time.
According to some legends, Patanjali was an incarnation of the serpent god Ananta or Shesha, who supported the earth on his coils. He was born to a sage named Gonika, who prayed to the sun god for a son. As she was offering water to the sun, a tiny snake fell into her palms. She realized that it was a divine gift and named him Patanjali, meaning \"one who fell (pat) from the folded hands (anjali)\".
Patanjali then grew up to be a great scholar and yogi, who mastered various disciplines of knowledge and taught them to his disciples. He composed the Yoga Sutra as a summary of his teachings on yoga, which he derived from various sources such as the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita and the teachings of his guru.
